At Altus Training Center we use the Inbody 570 DSM-BIA device to measure your body composition. 'DSM-BIA' stands for 'Direct Segmental Multi-Frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis'. This device utilizes a unique, patented technology which allows the machine to separately analyze your body as five 'compartments': each limb, plus your trunk.  Lesser BIA technologies only measure the body as a single whole 'cylinder', rendering results which are far less accurate than those achieved with the Inbody.

To obtain the analysis, the device measures the amount of Impedance (resistance to a safe, low-level alternating current) passed through the body and limbs via an unique 8-Point Tactile Electrode System. 

The human body is composed of five cylinders: the arms, the legs and the trunk. With the unique technology of the InBody, the trunk is directly measured. The trunk is occupied by various internal organs and its metabolic characteristics are different from the other parts of the body. It is important to precisely and directly measure the trunk, since the trunk has very low resistance compared to the arms and legs.

Multiple Varied Frequencies for Accuracy

Electric currents have differing penetration abilities depending on their frequency. Some frequencies are better suited for measuring body water outside the cell, while others are capable of passing through cell membranes and measuring total body water. Currents with higher frequencies can determine the water content inside the cell because they can penetrate the cell membrane. Conversely, currents with lower frequencies have limited abilities in penetrating cell membranes and will follow the path of least resistance by traveling around them, making them suitable for measuring the water outside the cells.In light of all this, InBody makes use of multiple currents at varying frequencies in order to provide the most precise body water analysis results, and trunk impedance measurements.

By using multiple frequencies, InBody devices are able to accurately measure total body water and accurately analyze both extracellular water and intracellular water, and are suitable for analyzing individuals with imbalanced body water distributions.

By using multiple currents set at different frequencies, InBody devices are able to provide precise information about body composition because many resistance values are attained.

8 Point Tactile Electrode System with Thumb Electrodes


When measuring impedance through any type of electrode, contact resistance occurs, and it is important to control the contact resistance in order to correctly measure the resistance in the body.

The InBody uses a unique method of electrode placement. The 8-point tactile method separates the current and voltage starting point, thus measurement always begins at a fixed point in the wrists and ankles. This provides high reproduction of results and correct body impedance measurement because the contact resistance from the skin has been removed.

No Empirical Data Estimations


Empirical estimations are values that are achieved through observation. This data is useful while measuring the AVERAGE, typical body type. But what happens if you are not a typical body type? This is the case for the majority of people.

Due to the separate measurements of the trunk, arms and legs, your InBody results will be correct regardless of age, sex, race, and body type.

2. Individualization

InBody does not use empirical data – therefore providing the most accurate individual results for you! Empirical estimation is the process of including averages in calculations. Such measurements that can be used in body composition analysis are age, gender, ethnicity and sometimes body type. Estimating these factors decreases result sensitivity, therefore bringing difficulty in monitoring accurate body composition change. On any other machine, change your gender, age or body type and see your results change dramatically – yet you have not changed at all. 3. Direct Segmental Multi-frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (DSM-BIA) acknowledged by patents worldwide

InBody has a patented 8 point tactile electrode system which incorporates specific thumb point and palm technology. InBody separates the thumb and palm placement, unlike other machines that rely on two palm placements only.

Having two points on the palm can change the starting point of voltage and current based on common variables such as hand placement and the size of a hand. This can dramatically change the scan results and reproducibility of each scan.

The patented thumb point and palm technology exclusive to InBody creates highly reproducible data by fixing the starting location of current and voltage, regardless of hand placement.

5. Trunk Measurement

InBody is the only machine that directly segmentally measure the trunk. As the trunk occupies the largest volume on the body it is of vital importance to scan correctly for accurate results. Lack of technology requires other devices to estimate the trunk which is a significant point as it reduces accuracy significantly.
